Kathryn Loughlin runs the vineyard and Cairn Coghill is Askerne’s winemaker. The Askerne team are passionate about our site and wines and this is reflected in the cellar door experience click here to learn more about visiting us.
Askerne’s wines reflect our special site, with multiple clones of most varieties matched to the various soils to build complexity. Small production enables careful attentive artisan winemaking. Askerne is accredited as a sustainable producer under Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand.
The ethos and passion in the vineyard and winery have been reflected in consistent recognition for Chardonnays, aromatic whites, Bordeaux reds, rosés, and dessert wines.
Reviews
From Cameron Douglas - Reserve Chardonnay 2022, Hawke's Bay - 95 Points
Complex and detailed bouquet with layers of fresh stone fruits and white fleshed tree fruits, some grapefruit and a light reductive gun flint quality. Complex and new. As the wine touches the palate textures of silk and cream, a near full-bodied mouthfeel with flavours that reflect the bouquet - stone and citrus fruits, a mix of baking spice and moderate toasty barrel influences. Complex and young still, great mouthfeel and finish. A lovely wine with best drinking from 2024 through 2030.
From Winestate - Askerne Reserve Hawke's Bay Gewürztraminer 2021 5 stars
This classy wine is sturdy, with deep, peachy, spicy flavours, showing impressive delicacy and concentration, a slightly oily texture, and a gently sweet, well-spiced, lasting finish. Still youthful, but already delicious, it’s a drink now or cellaring proposition.
From Wine Orbit – Askerne Dr John Cabernet Sauvignon Cabernet Franc Merlot – 94 points
Beautifully refined and graceful, the wine shows blackcurrant, spiced cherry, olive, game and cedar notes on the nose, leading to a concentrated palate offering beautifully layered mouthfeel together with ripe fruit intensity. Stylish and elegantly structured with a persistent sturdy finish. A blend of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc & merlot. At its best: now to 2034.
