Welcome to Richmond Plains / Te Mania e-cellar door
Richmond Plains is an organic wine making pioneer producing New Zealand’s first Certified Organic Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. We also produce Pinot Gris, Riesling, Chardonnay, Rose, Syrah and Blanc de Noir – Pinot Noir made as a white wine.
We believe in making great wines by working with nature in our vineyard environment. By using organic methods we can truly express the vineyard’s character or terroir in the wines.
Richmond Plains has been growing and making organic wine since inception in 1991 and is Certified Organic by Asure Quality, New Zealand.
Te Mānia (the Maori name for “The Plains”) is a family-owned Nelson winery, located near the beautiful coastline of Tasman Bay.
Our vineyards flourish on the ancient alluvial terraces through which rivers flow from the mountains to the sea.
These stony soils, combined with Nelson’s cool maritime climate and high sunshine hours, produce grapes and wines of the finest quality.
The Nelson region is one of the New World’s finest cool-climate, wine producing areas.
Our vineyards enjoy the most sunshine hours of all New Zealand grape growing regions. This sunshine and warmth is moderated by the afternoon sea breeze which rolls in cooling the vineyards. This gradual ripening over a long growing season from September till harvest between late March till the end of April slowly builds intense flavour in our grapes.
Combining this fabulous Nelson climate with ancient free-draining stony clay loam soils is perfect for hand crafting vibrant fruit driven white wines and well-structured elegant red wines of exceptional quality.
By managing our vineyard organically we can truly express the natural terroir of the vineyard and environment in our wine.
“Learning the pleasures of living in harmony with nature and enjoying its bounty is food for the soul."
Reviews
Te Mania Reserve Pinot Noir 2020
Floral, fruity, sweet scented and varietal with aromas of raspberry and cherry, ripe red apple skin and a core of mineral and gun-flint. Impressive on the palate with flavours of baking spices and red fruits, an abundance of fine tannins and acidity for foundation and structure. Moderate oak layer adds tannins and a toasty quality with vanilla and nut flavours. Youthful still, well made with a lengthy finish.

Richmond Plains Sauvignon Blanc 2022
Intensely aromatic, the bouquet shows Granny Smith apple, nectarine, fig and kaffir lime characters, followed by a lively palate that's filled with juicy fruit flavours backed by fine texture and bright acidity, offering fabulous drinking. Certified organic.

Fabulously fruited and wonderfully complex, the inviting bouquet shows golden peach, fig, nougat and cedar characters, leading to a concentrated palate that is succulent and supple. The wine offers terrific fruit power together with seductive oak nuances, beautifully complemented by creamy texture and refreshing acidity.
