Named for the coal seam which was mined during the goldrush and lies beneath the Carrick Vineyards – The Excelsior is our finest expression of Pinot Noir.
A single vineyard wine, created through careful barrel selection and prolonged ageing in the cellar before bottling. Each vintage of Excelsior we celebrate local and NZ artists, showcasing their artwork alongside ours. The 2019 Excelsior features a painting by local artist Rachel Hirabayashi - "Under the Lake" 2022 - inspired by the flooding of the Clutha River caused by the construction of the Clyde Dam.
"Fantastic bouquet of complexity and promise with aromas of synergy, soils and carefully selected new barrels, ripe red berry fruit scents and baking spices. Taut, youthful, flinty and savoury with dried herbs and toasty barrels spices, wild thyme and cherry flesh, raspberry and roasted cashew nut from new barrel. Complex, varietal and enticing, smoke and flint, a mix of light and dark red berries, flint and mineral. This completeness in the bouquet translates to the palate with a youthful energy, tautness and developing style. Some grippy tannins are accentuated by the acid line, easily contrasted by the core fruit flavours, yet a wine that boasts its need to develop more before it’s ready to drink. Well made, just youthful still, best drinking from 2027 through 2034+.
