Welcome to Mondillo's e-Cellar Door
From our home to yours…
Passion for their vineyards, an inherent love of the environment and a desire to consistently produce exquisite wines are the drivers for Domenic and Ally Mondillo whose cellar door, set in the majestic and rugged Bendigo Station, is one of the region’s best kept secrets.
Domenic’s Italian heritage is steeped in many generations of cooking great food and making superb wine. Enjoying strong family traditions and values, his Italian Grandfather taught him the secrets of making fine wine in the cellar amongst the home-made preserves, prosciutto and Italian cheeses. Domenic learned the art of drinking wine at his grandfather’s table fuelling his taste at an early age for combining, and pairing wine and food. With a degree in Culinary Arts from Johnson & Wales University in Rhode Island USA, Domenic moved to New Zealand in 1981 and made his culinary mark in Queenstown as the owner and executive chef of two multi award-winning restaurants, before being enticed full time into the world of wine in 1992. Achieving Viticulture and Oenology qualifications Domenic has been instrumental in designing and developing vineyards throughout Central Otago for the past 30 years.
Domenic, and his New Zealand wife Ally, established their own vineyard at Bendigo in 2001. Jane Skilton MW wrote back in 2006 that “fruit grown in Bendigo, a hot sub region overlooking Lake Dunstan, seems to give wines extraordinary richness and power, this 2005 first release Mondillo Pinot Noir has an opulent, almost decadent quality. A very exciting Pinot Noir from a winery I shall be looking out for in the future.” Since that review, Mondillo wines have gone on to be showcased by the US Sommelier Journal, Wine Spectator, Wine Advocate, US Burghound.com, Len Evans Foundation Australia, Global Fairness Initiative US and Air New Zealand along with Champion Wine of the Show Trophy, Champion Pinot Noir Trophy plus fabulous wine reviews and accolades each vintage; something Mondillo is very proud of.
Mondillo portfolio includes Pinot Noir, Riesling, Rosé the Limited Edition Bella Reserve Pinot Noir and Late Harvest Nina wines. Enjoy – Saluté
Reviews
Cameron Douglas MS - Mondillo Pinot Noir 2020
95/100 Outstanding! Fantastic bouquet with ripe red berry fruits laced with mineral and smoky wood tones. Complex, youthful and enticing. Equally delightful and complex on the palate, a core of ripe red berry fruits are contrasted by firm tannins and acid line. Barrel spices and tannins deliver a firm texture contrasted by varietal fruit flavours. Delicious, vibrant, fresh and complex lengthy finish. A wine that will happily rest in your cellar till 2025 then deliver excellent drink through 2035+.
Bob Campbell MW - Mondillo Pinot Noir 2020
95/100 Dense, ripe and concentrated pinot noir with cassis, dark cherry, floral/violet and a hint of spice/anise. Vibrant, wine that is deliciously drinkable now but should age well. It opened up as it sat in the glass. 100% destemmed, fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged for 11 months in French oak barrels, 30% new.
Cameron Douglas MS - Mondillo 'Nina' Late Harvest 2021
94 Points – Excellent Enticing and complex, fruit centric with scents of mandarin and lime flower, honeysuckle and lemon. Off-dry with medium+ sweetness, a core of lemon and apple then lime flower and white peach flavours. Contrasting acidity, bright, fresh and new. A delicious wine with a satisfying and lengthy finish. Best drinking from 2022 through 2028+.
Sam Kim / Wine Orbit - Mondillo Rosé 2022
95 Points – Excellent Immensely charming, this is seriously good. The elegantly fragrant bouquet shows red apple raspberry, floral and subtle spice aromas, leading to a succulent palate that's beautifully rounded and flowing. It's wonderfully framed by fleshy texture and refreshing acidity, finishing textural and delicious. At its best: now to 2025
Bob Campbell MW - Mondillo Bella Reserve Pinot Noir 2019
96/100 – Five Stars The highly impressive 2019 vintage is a powerful, single-vineyard red, estate-grown and hand-selected from four rows at Bendigo, and matured for 17 months in French oak barriques (one year old). A deeply-scented, concentrated pinot noir with ripe dark-fleshed plum, cassis, mixed spice, dark chocolate, wood smoke and nutty oak flavours supported by a backbone of ripe tannins.
