Woodside Hill is a small family-owned producer that specialises in Merlot/Cabernet Franc blends. The site is situated on a north-facing slope, mostly about 20 degrees, on Waiheke Island.
A typical year for us is a wet and windy spring followed by a dry summer, that with a bit of luck holds out until the end of march when we harvest.
Our vineyard is planted in 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot.
Our clay soils hold water from winter rains so there is no irrigation required on our site. This keeps yields low at around 3.5 - 4 tonnes across our hectare of vines. Typically our Reserve wines are 50% new oak (mostly fine-grained subtle oak) and spend 18 months in barrel and then 2 years in bottle before release
